From an open shower floor to marble and mosaic
These photos follow one of our own installations through demolition, the mortar bed, bonded waterproofing and the tile finish.

Tear it out
The old pan comes out down to the joists. Whatever failed gets found and fixed before anything new goes in.

Float the mud bed
Packed mortar over wire lath, floated flat and sloped by hand, with the radiant tubing encapsulated in it.

Bond the waterproofing
Schluter KERDI bonded to the mud bed, drains tied in, corners and seams sealed, then flood tested.

Set the tile
Marble walls and a hex mosaic floor, set on a base that's dead flat, fully supported and completely waterproof.
The visible finish is marble with a hexagon mosaic floor. The work beneath it includes the hand-floated mortar bed, KERDI membrane, sealed corners and drain connections.

What's usually under a leaking shower
A failed shower pan opened up: water tracking through the old membrane, rot in the framing underneath.
By the time a stain shows up on the ceiling below, water has been getting past the tile for a long time. The only real fix is opening the floor, finding where it failed, and rebuilding the pan.
